FOR RELEASE FRIDAY, JUNE 27, 2014
BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Bausch + Lomb, a leading global eye health company, today announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued marketing clearance for Biotrue® ONEday for Presbyopia (nesofilcon A) soft (Hydrophilic) contact lens, the first daily disposable multifocal contact lens from the Biotrue ONEday family of products. Featuring a next generation 3-Zone Progressive™ design, along with bio-inspired HyperGel™ material, the new lens provides comfortable vision throughout the day, and exceptional vision across near, intermediate and distance.
“For people with presbyopia, finding a comfortable daily disposable contact lens that provides clear vision at all distances can be a challenge. The new Biotrue ONEday for Presbyopia combines the bio-inspired design and benefits that contact lens wearers have come to expect from Biotrue ONEday, with the outstanding optical 3-Zone Progressive design of PureVision®2 Multi-Focal for Presbyopia,” said Mark McKenna, vice president and general manager, Vision Care, Bausch + Lomb. “We’re confident that the comfort and clarity that this new lens offers will also be a welcome solution for eye care professionals.”
The bio-inspired HyperGel material is designed to work like the eye by meeting the oxygen level the open eye needs for healthy, white eyes, while matching the cornea’s water content for all-day comfort and mimicking the lipid layer by using a surfactant-enriched lens surface to retain moisture and shape throughout the day. The multifocal design offers near, intermediate, and distance vision.
According to a recent study, 89 percent of daily disposable patients say Biotrue ONEday lenses are comfortable throughout the day1, while 85 percent of daily disposable patients say Biotrue ONEday lenses help eyes stay moist throughout the day.1 Ninety percent of people who used Biotrue ONEday daily disposable lenses report that it provides consistent, crisp, clear, comfortable vision throughout the day. Similarly, eighty percent say they would recommend that their friends and family ask their eye doctors about Biotrue ONEday daily disposable contact lenses.2
“I have heard first-hand from eye care professionals about their desire for Bausch + Lomb to create a daily disposable multifocal contact lens, as part of the Biotrue ONEday family of products,” said Benjamin Chudner, OD, FAAO. “By introducing a lens that provides comfort and clear vision at all distances, we continue our commitment to helping people see better to live better.”
In September, Biotrue ONEday was recognized by R&D Magazine as one of the 100 most technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace over the past year. Biotrue ONEday for Presbyopia will drive growth in an underserved multifocal market in a daily disposable modality, by combining the breakthrough bio-inspired material HyperGel of Biotrue ONEday, with Bausch + Lomb’s most advanced optical design also used in PureVision2 for Presbyopia.
